Hi everyone! It's Jess again, filling in for Kim! I promised to fill you in on my fashion finds after my Beckley shopping trip. Good news! If you're looking for deals, look no further! Visit the southern part of the state and find serious sales in Beckley & Lewisburg. Last week I hit Crossroads Mall in Beckley and found major discounts at stores like Belk & American Eagle. My mom found tops with adorable prints, bought 2 classic button-downs, and fell in love with a pair of Jones New York black pants that will take her from day-to-night! All for under $100 at Belk! I picked up some Ugg look-alikes from American Eagle for under $30!

In Lewisburg I was in style heaven at Yarid's, where there was a shoe sale to end all shoe sales! Burberry ballet flats & Stuart Weitzman heels for less than $100! I snatched up a pair of Juicy Couture peep-toe patent leather pumps for only $50!

New Year's Eve Fashions

It's that time of year where we gather together to ring in the new year, and if you're anything like me, you agonize over what to wear. In this time of casual dress codes we are often left confused about what we should seek out for our New Year's Eve celebration.

Luckily, this year sequins are trending and you can't brouse though a store without finding several styles. Check out this simple top we found at The Limited (right).

Women are also reaching for assymetrical necklines, whether in simple tops or cocktail dresses. They are bound to turn heads and help you feel festive. Check out the fabulous dress (right) found at the Shops at the Greenbrier Resort.

Sue Wong- So Right!

Sue Wong is an exceptional designer specializing in cocktail attire and evening gowns. Yesterday, I experienced a shopping explosion when visiting Elizabeth Michaels Store on Grand Central Avenue in Vienna.

Armed with a list of events, and knowing I needed several new items for the Fall season I headed to one of my favorite boutiques in search of the right dresses and accessories.

I was so lucky to find a Sue Wong Lace Overlay Dress with a dramatic bell sleeve. Lace is so popular this season with designers as we feel a strong resurgence of the styles of the 1940's on the scene. The owner, Jane Engelke, exclaimed "that's a Kim dress!" and I knew I must have it for an upcoming wedding party.

Next, I needed a conservative dress for a rehearsal dinner event. I headed over to the Nicole Miller rack and sifted through several fabulous dresses, eventually finding the perfect dress. It was a geometric print dress with lots of gathering to create a perfect 1940's old-hollywood shape.

Check! Now that I've checked those two items off the list what's next? Well, I headed back over to the Sue Wong rack and grabbed everything in my size. After careful consideration of my conservative image and attire Ifound myself taking a walk on the wild side as I yelled "ring it up" and shoved a leopard print tribal dress on the counter. The global trend has been strong for a couple seasons but I also can feel safe in knowing that leopard prints never go out of style.

I thought I had done enough damage when Jane let me know the Whiting and Davis Handbags were on sale. 75% off!!!! I fell in love with a little elongated fringe number but option for the conservative black beaded bag, afterall I was already taking a personality risk by decking myself out in a wild leopard dress.

Ring Me up! What a fabulous shopping excursion. I love it when I can visit one shop and get everything on my list.

Leggings, a global phenomenon!

I just returned from London with a new-found love for leggings. Sure, I can be easily pursuaded and have been know to give into peer pressure a time or two but this trip caused me to fall in love with the leggings trend.

The women of London are incredibly fashionable, wearing the trends so well. They embrace the archetectural designs of the top designers with ease and typically leave the basics for others while they embrace the latest fads.

The leggings were everywhere and on everyone! From 16 to 60, the trend was unescapable! Now, as a fashion designer myself, I've been working and reworking this trend for two years, searching for the perfect fabric with the right amount of coverage for me to feel good in this trend.

So now I challenge everyone to give the trend a try. At first, you might feel a little exposed, but by the end of the day you'll be searching for more leggings in various colors and patterns.

PARRISH TO KICK OFF ‘KIDS CLUB’ AT TRANS ALLEGHENY BOOKS

Parkersburg, WV, September 2009---Trans Allegheny Books located at 725 Green Street in Parkersburg, West Virginia will kick off their monthly “Kids Club” event with former resident, Kim Parrish, and her newly released children’s book called The Snapdragon Princess on Saturday, September 26th. The event will start at 1:00 PM with a reading of the book followed by an opportunity to have the book signed by the local author. The event is open to the public.

Generosity Knows No Borders--Building Schools in Afghanistan

Since returning to West Virginia to launch WV LIVING, I've met some amazing people doing extraordinary things. One of those people is Parween Mascari, an attorney at Jackson & Kelley in Morgantown. I swear Parween must have super powers--not only is she one of the state's leading attorneys (just look in her car--boxes of briefs are stacked to the ceiling), she co-founded Generation Morgantown, serves on numerous boards and committees--and is the mother of four children. Parween is also an Afghan-American born in Parkersburg. She jokingly calls herself a "halfghan." And she is one of the proudest and vocal West Virginians I know!

Parween recently met with some Afghan judges and lawyers in D.C., who spoke about the need for chairs in Afghan schools. Chairs. The schools have no chairs so the children stand the entire day, making learning difficult. How can a child concentrate on learning when her legs are tired and aching? And even more amazing is the fact that these schools are open air schools held under trees, which makes it difficult in even the best circumstances, but impossible in inclement weather.

Parween was so moved by the experience that in response she created a company called Sultan's Daughters, and she has been selling beautiful pashmina shawls to benefit the construction and furnishing of schools in Afghanistan through the Nooristan Foundation. She has already raised enough money to build 20% of a school in a village called Pagisam. This past Friday, she held a fundraiser in conjunction with Generation Morgantown at Cafe Bacchus and raised $2,200 to further her efforts. It only takes $16,000 USD to get a school up and running!

I am never more proud to be a West Virginian than when I'm in the company of good people doing great things. Because it isn't easy. Inertia is a powerful thing. There are so many demands on our time, it is easy to say, "I wish I could..." It is a different story to say, "I will do." For those of you who read the magazine, you know that my favorite quote is from Ghandi--"Be the change you wish to see in the world." And my friend Parween exemplifies that. It makes me so proud when I meet "Do-ers" that I want to scream from the top of a mountain, "LOOK at what West Virginians are doing! We are changing the WORLD!"

Spring 2010

I've just completed a whirlwind traveling schedule visiting Manhattan's Garment District several times preparing for spring fashions. Yes- I said spring. I know, we've barely worn our current spring fashions and haven't even purchased for fall and yet designers, stylists and buyers are all searching for the hottest looks. What can we learn from this early planning? We can learn that many of the styles from this spring will continue into fall and still remain strong in 2010.

So what's in style in 2010? The 1940's will still remain an influence in the early part of spring. We'll see fitted, structured suits and a definite menswear influence continuing through fall and into the early part of the new year. We'll also see the Greek Goddess style consistant in this year as well so don't throw out your draped tops and gladiator shoes. Another trend I absolutely love is the Global Influence and it will transition slightly into an Exotic flair with rich colors and an island influence for summer 2010.

So what can we gain with this knowledge for fall 2009? Well, it's safe to wear your fitted suits, harem pants, draping tops and rich, bold colors. They will be right on trend! If you haven't purchased gladiator sandals, maxi dresses and beaded tunics- run, don't walk to the sales rack and stock up for spring 2010!

The team got together once again this past June to shoot fall fashions for the upcoming issue. What fun we had as we welcomed Miss WV USA, Jessi Pierson, to the studio in Morgantown. Jessi was voted the Miss Photogenic winner in the Miss USA Pageant so we knew we were going to get some great photos.

Taking the lead was photographer Rebecca Devono. Also working to create magic was Jane Engelke-stylist, and Jessica Schueler-assistant style editor. Jane was able to create 7 different looks by changing out the hair and makeup styles on the model effortlessly. She also had a hand in styling the clothing supplied by various vendors, manufacturers, stores and boutiques.

All in all, it was a successful day. Keep an eye out for the next issue to hit the stands.

While traveling on business this week to Miami I had a private tour of The Setai, an exclusive hotel that caters to the rich and famous. When I heard of the luxuries and pamperings that are offered to those who can afford them I wondered if I would ever see such pampering in my lifetime. And then, I ran across a wonderful handbag collection that custom makes bags by request. What? A bag made just for me!

Gina Shields, the sole proprietor, designer, and seamstress of Scigliano Designs, is much more than a designer-she is a passionate artist with the foresight to see a finished masterpiece while examining fabrics on the roll. She founded the business with the intent of deviating from the mainstream icons of fashion and allowing customers to be part of the process and create their own designs to reflect individual "purse"onality.In addition to her lifelong zest and admiration for the world of fashion, she has compiled qualifying credentials. Gina graduated with a degree in Fashion Design and a minor in Business. Inspiration for Scigliano Designs stems from the everlasting little black dress that travels from season to season, year after year, molding to the ever-changing fashion trends. Fall 2009 has spoken

A couple weeks ago I visited Coterie, one of the fashion trade shows that take place each year in New York where brands can showcase their products to retailers. This year the economy slowed the traffic but the booths still managed to wow the crowds.

What did I see? Lots of Bohemian. Gypsy. Global. Flowing tunics. Colorblocking items with detail. Maxi dresses. Peace love and the 70s. Sparkle and shine. Upscale tie-dye. Peasant tops. Geometric prints with 60's inspirations.

What brands really stood out? Ella Moss and Sky had packed booths with hundreds of people milling through their racks. The Michael Stars booth looked like a modern bar scene with simple tees in a rainbow of colors all being scooped up by the line of retailers seated in chrome stools belly up to a long working table. And the Milly booth didn't disappoint. It was upscale with a video running from their latest fashion show.

I was happy to see Custo Barcelona, a hip line of scarves, accessories and clothing with a real global influence in prints. I'm wondering if any stores in West Virginia have begun to carry this brand. I recently became acquainted with it while attending the NFL Wives fundraiser in Tampa. I was excited to see a bold scarf in their goody bags and have loved it since I got it!

As for shoes? Ballet flats still dominate. Gladiator sandals were also still commanding attention through the end of the year.

What was surprising? Ripped to shreds leggings, jeans and skirts. I'll leave that look for the younger generation.

I did notice that the smaller, lesser known brands were being swallowed up by the big brands and wondered if it was possible for them to complete with the brand giants.

All in all, it was a wonderful day of fashion and I'm looking forward to seeing the trends emerge in the stores.

The KPC and a touch of local Boho

Bohemian fashions are very strong for Spring/Summer 2009 and jewelry plays a huge hand in this trend.

During a recent shopping trip to Hornor and Harrison in Parkersburg, http://www.hornorharrison.com/, I found some fantastic jewelry at great prices. I picked up two sets of bangles for less than $20 and two necklaces with matching earrings for less than $20 each as well.

I loved the bangles so much I haven't stopped wearing them! I coupled the brown set with a bracelet I bought from http://www.gratitudecollections.net/ and sported them during my last 3 shows on HSN. When looking to update your wardrobe with a Bohemian influence look for items with natural beads, crystals, wood and a handmade flair. Necklaces are varying in length this season with long necklaces being the most popular. Attention is also placed on the wrist and layering is important to remember when dressing. Stack bracelets of varying styles, thicknesses and colors. A missmatched look works perfectly for this trend. Also, pull out some chunky rings with large gemstones. Earrings are going bold as well so don't be shy! Earthtones natural gems round out the Boho feeling!

I met with fashionable buyers from London last week and I'm anxious to report the hot trends moving forward for Fall of 2009. Yes- designers are already buzzing about Fall and I have yet to sport my global fashions hot for spring!

First Fashion Photo Shoot a Success

The first fashion photo shoot took place at Price Portraits in Charleston for WV LIVING and the end result was unbelievable! Model and former Miss WV USA Jessica Wedge sported 6 different looks in front of the camera and stylist Jane Engelke made sure the hair and makeup complimented each outfit!

I had a blast pulling clothing from various stores around West Virginia and Jane put the finishing touches on each outfit by adding the appropriate accessories. She's got a gift for fashion!

Rounding out the TEAM DIVA was Jessica Schueler, former Miss WV's Outstanding Teen and future fashion magazine editor. Our fearless leader, Nikki Bowman the creator and publisher of WV LIVING, also served as photographer.

Meet the Assistant Fashion Editor

Jessica Schueler is currently a senior at Concord University studying Public Relations and Business Administration. Jessica writes for Concord’s weekly newspaper, the Concordian and has had her own radio show on WCUR Concord University Radio. She is on the committee for Relay for Life and works in the Public Relations Box Office. Jessica enjoys studying the latest trends and fashions and hopes to one day have a career as a Fashion Editor.

Jessica was selected as the first Miss West Virginia’s Outstanding Teen in 2004. During her year she promoted her platform SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) throughout West Virginia and traveled to Missouri, North Carolina, and Florida representing the Miss America Organization. Jessica also developed the Mentor Princess Program and raised over $5,000 in scholarship money for the Miss West Virginia’s Outstanding Teens Scholarship Organization.

Since holding this prestigious title, Jessica placed as a Semi-Finalist at the 2008 Miss West Virginia USA Pageant and a Finalist at the 2008 Miss West Virginia Association of Fairs & Festivals Pageant.

Fab Jewelry Find!

I stopped into an "old favorite" yesterday. It's been a few years since I've shopped at Hornor and Harrison on Grand Central Avenue in Parkersburg. I've always enjoyed their selection and service.

While shopping, feilding emails, texts and phone calls I managed to focus on finding some fantastic jewelry. I picked up some metallic bronze and green bangles and two necklaces! The prices were unbelievable and I couldn't say no!

I also noticed they had several wardrobe fixers like the Hollywood Tape. I'm an avid collector so I bought extra for our shoot on Saturday.

I started talking with a very friendly staff member and she let me know they're the only retailer in the area that carries Seven for All Mankind jeans and they're quite popular. I also noticed an interesting pair of jeans that guarantee to give you an instant tummy tuck! Love it!

When I asked the salesperson what the hot seller was this month she replied "the sweaters on sale!" I agreed, it's still too early to think about spring fashions.

Casual, or Too Casual?

When is casual too casual?

I spent yesterday leisurely enjoying an afternoon at my favorite bookstore, Trans Allegheny Books in Parkersburg. (Okay, that's a personal fantasy as I haven't had a "leisurely day" in years but I can dream, right?) Walking into this book store I feel a sense of calm wrap around me; years of history and shelves of knowledge slowly transport me, even momentarily, into my own personal Zen.

Yesterday was a day of fun and relaxation; a casual time to enjoy my hometown. I'm a people watcher so of course I'm always checking out what people are wearing and what they're doing. I'm amazed by the amount of sweat pants and sweat shirts sported by the majority of the passersby. I understand it's 20 degrees outside but let's unleash our inner Style Diva and slap on some lip gloss and a trendy oversized sweater with a pair of skinny jeans in lieu of gym attire.

Oversized knits are quite hot this season. Banana Republic, Macy's, Gap, and every other major retal chain has numerous styles currently in the sales bin. Why not pick up an end-of-the-season-find?

Let's take an oath as stylish women of the mountain state to collectively burn our gym clothes, afterall, when was the last time we had time to go to the gym?

Can't Get Enough Scarves!

It's official- the word is out! Scarves will remain popular through Spring of 2009. I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist or fashion forecaster to predict this news. All you have to do is look around. They're in every store, in every price range!

I recently visited Tamarack, a fabulous store boasting a compilation of various items all made in the mountain state, and came across a rack of handmade scarves. They were fabulous! Some had been knitted while other were woven but each and every one had its own distinct personality. That's the beauty of a handmade item. Prices ranged from $30-$50; well worth it since it also comes with a great story of it's origins!

Stop into Tamarack on I77 and see what you can find! Also, ask for your copy of WV LIVING magazine. They carry it!

I'm off to an NFL Wives Charity Event/Fashion Show this morning. After what seemed like hours in my closet I realized I was over-thinking my goal. I wanted to look chic and stylish and I was trying too hard. What's wrong with my simple black dress. How many years have I preached the need for a simple black dress!?!

So here I stand, in a fabulous yet casual little black dress appropriate for a fashion show event, and feeling great!

Tony Bowls Gowns in West Virginia!!

Miss Indiana, Katie Stam, wore custom Tony Bowls gowns for the evening gown and talent competitions at the Miss America 2009 Contest.

The Tony Bowls Collection is available at The Crowning Touch in Buckhannon and Elizabeth Michaels in Parkersburg.

I had a chance to spend a few hours with Tony at the Miss America Pageant last week. He was showcasing his latest gowns and dressing numerous celebrities for the event. I saw a lot of styles similar to the tropical maxi dress with wide straps, plunging necklines and bright floral prints. I also adored the gowns with empire waistlines and fly away chiffon splitting in the center.

As for color, anything goes, from brights to neutrals. Tony has a way of celebrating a woman's curves and the shades of champagne, nude, and light bronze enhanced his designs and created an appealing look. Numerous contestants chose evening gowns in these hues and glowed from the Las Vegas stage located at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

With twenty years of retail experience, Tony applies firsthand knowledge of what the fashion-forward customer is looking for to the designs of these extraordinary brands. For the greater part of the last twelve years, Tony owned and managed his own retail outlet. He actively promoted and sold prom, pageant and formalwear collections. During his time in retail, Tony also designed for Miss America and Miss USA contestants.

Tony has graciously offered to send gowns for our first photo shoot for WV LIVING in Style. We love Tony!!

I had a chance to visit with Miss West Virginia during the recent Miss America Pageant. Kayla Lynam looked so beautiful and represented the state well at the competition in Las Vegas.

Numerous clothing sponsors from across the mountain state donate gowns and cocktail dresses to the winner each year as part of the prize package to prepare her for the national pageant. I love shopping for cocktail dresses and have found numerous boutiques across the state with fabulous finds. Of course, we all know I love to shop at Elizabeth Michaels in Parkersburg. Leah Lasker Summers, Miss West Virginia 1991, tells me she's found some fabulous dresses at Coni and Franc in Morgantown for numerous cocktail parties.

I'm so excited to sign on as the Style Editor at WV LIVING magazine! I'm so proud to say I'm a West Virginia native, and although my career has taken me to other parts of the country, I can truly say my heart will always remain in the mountain state.
